Muggle Studies
“Remus,” Ron said out of nowhere one afternoon, “why can't Muggles see Dementors?”
“Because they are magical creatures and made of pure darkness. Therefore they are invisible to Muggles.” Remus put down the book he was reading and explained it like Ron was once again one of his third year students.
“I know that, but it's still odd.” said Ron. “I mean, they are so real, you know. Muggles can feel their presence, so why not see them?”
“I don't know,” Remus replied. “I'm not the one that created Dementors or the laws of magic.”
“And they can see Dragons, can't they? Why not Dementors?”
“I really don't know, Ron. I'm sorry,” Remus apologised.
“Okay,” Ron sighed.
A few minutes of silence followed before Ron opened his mouth again.
“What about Pygmy Puffs then?”
Remus sighed and looked up. He saw Ron petting the blue fur of his little pet, Ollie. “I've never thought about it, Ron. Ask your brothers. They should know a lot about them, I hope.”
“Meh... it's not important. I was just wondering.”
“Okay, then.” Remus turned his attention back to his book.
“Do you think Muggles have stuff we can't see?” Ron suddenly asked.
“Why this sudden obsession with Muggles, Ron?” Remus put down his book. There was no point in trying to read anymore.
“I grew up in a wizard home and a wizard town, and I never took Muggle studies in school. I just realised how little I know about them.”
“And you just realised this now?”
“No, I've been thinking about it often. But I thought maybe you would know. You were a teacher and you are supposed to be smart.”
Remus chuckled. “Let me remind you that I was not a Muggle studies teacher, nor a teacher in Care of Magical Creatures. I don't have all the answers.”
“But that means that my questions aren't that stupid! Since even you can't answer them.” Ron smiled proudly.
“I guess that's right,” Remus smiled back. “And I took Muggle studies...”
“Funny beings, Muggles.” Ron said. “But they do have some cool gadgets, though. I can understand why Dad is so fascinated. The way they use that electricity-stuff is really impressive! Dad's just got this awesome thing called a stereo. It can play all sorts of music, you just put in a little round disk or turn on the Muggle wireless radio. Some of them can even make music come out of these weird plastic things with a tape in them. I wonder how they do it.”
“Muggle magic?” Remus suggested.
“Probably,” said Ron. “Are we completely sure they're actually Muggles?
