Scary Things
“Seriously, Weasley. Spiders?” Seamus Finnigan almost died laughing on their way to the next class.
“So what,” Ron said. “Longbottom's afraid of Snape!”
“Well, Snape does frighten all,” said Dean and together with Seamus disappeared around a corner. Ron could still hear their laughter.
Later that night, Ron was in his bed thinking about spiders. What was it about them that was so terrifying? The acromantula spoke for itself, but that wasn't the only spider.
“Ron?” he heard a voice whisper. “Are you sleeping?” The voice was coming from Neville's bed.
“No,” Ron whispered back.
“I really don't like spiders either.” Neville whispered.
“Ok?”
“I think it's something with their legs,” Neville added.
“Yeah, they are pretty creepy.” Ron agreed.
“But you know what I like even less?” Neville asked.
“Snape?”
“No, I mean animals or creatures.”
“What?”
“Bats!” Neville stated.
“Bats? That's probably because Snape looks like a giant one,” Ron snorted.
“Very funny, Ron!” Neville did not sound amused, “but what would be the best way of getting rid of a bat?”
“I would blast it to pieces with a curse.”
“What if you couldn't to magic?” Neville wondered.
“But we can do magic!”
“But what if you were in a situation where you couldn't?”
Ron thought about it. How did Muggles get rid of bats?
“I guess maybe throw some hot water on them would work.”
“That sounds painful.”
“You're supposed to get rid of them.” Ron sighed.
“What if you don't have hot water?” Neville asked.
Ron moaned. “Well, then throw a beef knife on them.”
“But I don't want to hurt them.”
“Neville, seriously! They're BATS! Why are you worrying about not hurting them?”
“They haven't done anything to me, so why would I hurt them?”
Ron buried his face in the pillow and wanted to scream. Why were they even having this conversation?
“Well, then cover the room with syrup and hope that they get stuck then?”
“But I don't have syrup either.” said Neville, his voice shaking. “And it's coming closer!”
“What?”
“It's coming closer!”
Ron got up from his bed and tore the curtains away from Neville's. There he saw the boy, almost completely hidden under his blanket, and a bat hanging from the ceiling right above his face.
“My wand is in my robe pocket.” Neville said embarrassed.
Ron pulled out his own wand and sent a stunning spell, making the bat fall down on Neville's bed.
The other boy yelped.
Ron picked up the bat and threw it out the window.
“Can we sleep now?”
“S-sh-sh-Sure,” Neville stuttered.
