A New Toy
“Ron, put down that coffee and come help me!” Remus demanded as he stepped into their living room.
Ron put down the mug and the newspaper he was reading and jumped up from the sofa. Remus was trying to push a gigantic package through the doorway.
“What is that?” Ron wondered. “And why don't you use magic to get it inside?”
“It's a surprise, and we'll ruin it if we use magic.”
“Oh, no! Don't tell me you've gone all crazy about Muggle-things like Dad!” Ron sighed.
“Ron. No one can be as crazy about Muggles as your father.” Remus chuckled.
Ron nodded in agreement and helped Remus in with the huge thing.
“What is this?” Ron asked as Remus started to open the box.
“I don't want to tell you just yet. Why don't you and put the fish in the oven while I finish this?” Remus suggested.
Ron moaned, but went into the kitchen. He hoped Remus wouldn't take too long with the new thing. He hated cooking.
Half an hour later Remus called from the living room. Ron stormed out to see what the surprise was.
He was met by a huge black screen standing in front of the sofa.
“Is that a television?”
“It sure is!” Remus said proudly. “I've always wanted one, and I thought it was about time that we treated ourselves to something fancy.”
“I think my Dad had an old one in the shed, but I don't think it worked properly.” Ron said while looking closely at the big black thing. “But that one had a lot of buttons and switches. This doesn't have anything. Are you sure they haven't sold you a broken one?”
“It comes with some sort of wand.” Remus said and showed Ron a long black thing with a ton of buttons.
“Whoa! Cool!” Ron exclaimed and grabbed the TV-wand. “What does it do?”
“I don't know yet. I think I will have to read the manual.” Remus said and took out a thick book from the box.
“Manual? Yeah, sounds like you to get an awesome new toy and then start reading a bloody book.” Ron said and pressed one of the buttons.
A picture of something that looked like snow appeared on the screen followed by a loud and terrible noise.
“Aaaargh, make it stop!” Remus shouted, and Ron took out his wand. “NO!” Remus screamed. “No magic! It will break it!”
Ron tried to push the buttons on the TV-wand, but nothing happened. He was getting really stressed out and threw the black thing to Remus. “You try it!” he demanded.
Remus did what Ron had done. He tried every single button and when he finally reached the red, scary-looking button on the top, the screen went black and everything got quiet.
The men sighed in unison.
“Perhaps the book isn't such a bad idea after all,” mumbled Ron. “I'll go and finish dinner.”
