A tender kiss and a soft familiar voice woke Severus up.
"Happy anniversary, love."
He opened his eyes and looked into the eyes of one grinning and excited werewolf. He knew that look, and it meant trouble.
"What are you planning, Lupin?"
"Just a little surprise," Remus said and jumped down from the bed. "Hurry and get dressed."
"Oh, no," Severus moaned and pulled the sheets over his head. He really wasn't in the mood for one of Remus' great adventures.
"Come on, Severus!" Remus whined and pulled the sheets away. "This is a very special day and I don't want to be late."
"Late for what?"
"You'll see. Get up!"
Remus was waiting impatiently while Severus reluctantly rose from the bed and slowly got dressed.
"Are you ready?" Remus asked the second Severus had buttoned the last button.
"You know I hate surprises," Severus muttered.
"You'll need a scarf," Remus ignored his response and summoned one.
He walked up to Severus, but instead of wrapping it around his neck, he began to tie it around his head.
"Oh no, Lupin!" Severus objected. "No blindfolds!"
"But Severus," Remus whined. "It's a surprise and I don't want you to see it too soon. I promise you will love it."
"You always say that, and you're always wrong. One would have thought you knew me after living together for a decade." Severus mumbled, but agreed to the blindfold. Perhaps it was even for the best?
With the scarf firmly in place, Remus left the room to fetch something and then Apparated them to somewhere windy.
"Okay, Severus. We're here." Remus said. "Just grab my arm, and I'll lead the way."
Severus raised his eyebrows under the blindfold, but followed. He dreaded this, but hoped that Remus for once had actually managed to organise a pleasant surprise.
He heard Remus greet a man, but he must immediately cast a Muffliato charm, because when they reached him, all Severus could hear was a buzzing sound.
Minutes later the charm lifted, and the man had apparently gone.
Remus led Severus a couple of steps farther and then placed his hand on some sort of rim.
"Can you climb over this?" Remus asked.
"Why?" Severus asked sceptically.
"Because," Remus simply answered, and Severus knew he was not going to get any explanation.
He sighed and climbed over the edge. Remus followed him.
"Lupin, where are we going? And why are we in a basket?"
"It won't be long now, Severus." Remus kissed him on the cheek.
The basket began to shake, and Severus was getting nervous. He had a terrible feeling what this was, and he didn't like it one bit.
The basket was shaking more than ever and Severus felt the wind blow in his hair and robes.
"Lupin, seriously," he wondered if Remus had forgotten about his blindfold and fear of surprises.
"Don't worry, Severus. I just want to wait for the right moment."
"There will never be a right moment, I'm taking this off now!" Severus grabbed the scarf and pulled it down.
"Surprise," Remus said and wrapped his arms around him to kiss him.
It was just as Severus had feared. They were in a hot air balloon, far, far from the ground. When he saw how far up they were, he wished he hadn't removed the blindfold. Severus was shaking as bad as the basket he was standing in.
"Isn't it wonderful, Severus?" Remus grinned.
"Not really," Severus said through clenched teeth.
"We're in Yorkshire." Remus informed.
"No, we're not in Yorkshire," hissed Severus. "We're over Yorkshire."
Remus chuckled. "That is true. I was thinking we could have a romantic brunch up here."
Severus snorted.
"Why is that so funny, Severus?" Remus asked and leaned in to kiss him. The movement of the basket made Severus grasp the hold of Remus' robes in fear.
"Get me down, Lupin!" he hissed.
"Why?" smiled Remus. "We are all alone up here with this beautiful view. I even brought champagne."
"Get me down!" Severus demanded.
"I know it's not exactly mile-high, but what do you say of starting a 2000 feet club?"
"Are you seriously suggesting that we have sex up here? You are crazy, Lupin."
"Crazy about you," Remus said with a cheesy grin and tried to kiss him.
"Get me down NOW!" Severus said and pushed him away.
He sank down to the bottom of the basket. It felt safer there as he couldn't see anything.
"I didn't realise you were afraid of heights, Severus," said Remus and began the descent. "I'm sorry."
"I'm not afraid," Severus lied. "I just prefer the ground."
"That's okay, love," Remus smiled, "we can have a picnic on the ground instead."
A few minutes later, the balloon reached the ground and landed with a thump. They climbed out. Severus was still a bit shaky, but Remus helped him out.
The man Remus had probably talked to before came towards them.
"That was quick," he said as he reached them. "You didn't have to get back until one o'clock."
"I know," said Remus. "But it was a bit colder up there than we had anticipated." Severus appreciated that Remus was being tactful.
"Thank you so much for lending us your balloon," said Severus with a shaky voice.
"No problem," said the man.
Remus grabbed Severus' arm, and they walked until they were out of sight before they Disapparated.
"I hope a beach is more to your liking, Severus."
"Our house would be preferable, but this will do," Severus smiled carefully and kissed Remus on the cheek.
"I'm sorry, Severus. I really thought it was a romantic idea." Remus said and opened the bottle of champagne.
"You mean well, but when will you learn that I hate surprises?"
"You can't hate all surprises," Remus said and poured two glasses of champagne and handed one of them to Severus.
"Yes, I do!" Severus stated.
"Oh, I don't believe you." Remus smiled. "I bet there is one surprise you don't hate. I just haven't found it yet."
Severus sighed and took a sip of champagne. Living with Remus was indeed a challenge, but also absolutely worth it.
